The Times Square
New Year's Eve Centennial Ball

For over a century, revelers have traveled to Times Square to celebrate the New Year by counting down the final seconds as a ball descends atop One Times Square. The first Ball, introduced by The New York Times in 1907, festured 100 25-watt incandescent bulbs - the latest lighting technology at the time. The ball has always been a physical symbol of second chances, new starts, powerful memories and the promise of the future = the ultimate Times Square fusion of tradition with cutting-edge technology.

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the ball-lowering tradition, the Times Square Alliance and Countdown Enterainment, co-producers of the Times Square New Year's EveCelebration, commissioned Waterford Crystal and the Philips Lighting Company to craft the Ball Displayed here, for the celebration on December 31st 2007. This Ball is covered thieh 672 Waterford Crystal triangles and illuminated by 9,576 Philips Luxeon LEDs. The Lighting designer if Focus Lighting. The Times Square New Year's Eve  Ball is the property of the owners of One Times Square, Jamestown and Sherwood Equities, and was replaced in 2008 by the current Ball, now permanently situated atop One Times Square.

TIMES SQUARE
WHERE MODERN AMERICA WAS INVENTED
Times Square: where modern America was invented. It's not a square at all. Just a ten-block bowtie where an old Native American trail - Broadway - meets Seventh Avenue. Until the 20th,century, Long Acre Square, as it was known, was a busy commercial center, a fancy neighborhood, a secretive address for brothels and the home of horse stables.

Then in 1903 The New York Times began building its headquarters there and convinced the city to change the area's name to Times Square on April 8, 1904. That October, the Times Square subway station opened. And then on December 31: 1904, the official opening of the Times Building was accompanied by a New Year's Eve celebration that continues to this day, centered on that same bulldlng.

- ENTERTAINING AMERICA
This is where Americans devise new ways to entertain themselves. Following the brothels, Times Square quickly became home to the densest collection of theaters in America. These theaters showcased not Old World opera, but the new popular culture born of America's immigrant stew vaudeville and musicals, jazz and the movies.

- SIGNS OF THE TIMES
The most popular spectacles of Times Square have always been free - the electrical signs that gave Broadway its reputation as "The Great White Way." Over the course of the past hundred years, Times Square has become the outdoor laboratory for new ways to communicate and advertise in a vast metropolis and throughout the nation.

1903년 뉴욕타임즈에서 건물을 지어 1904년 4월 8일 타임스퀘어라고 명명했군요 ^^ 100년이 넘었네여~

- MAKING NEWS
Times Square is also where American news was made. It wasn't just that the  country's most important newspaper was produced here or that the "zipper" around the Times Building told New Yorkers of the world's news instantaneously. It was here that writers like Walter Winchell and Damon Runyon perfected the punchy reporting style, the gossip column, and the use of slang that redefined what news was how it was to be written and reported, and what counted.

- LAND OF DESIRE
Times Square has literally sold sex for well over a century, with prostitution and sex theaters defining the area for much of the post-World War II era. But in a larger sense, Times Square was a place where boundaries could be pushed and broken, and desire expressed. It is no accident that, in Times Square, women could challenge the rules of dating, and gays and lesbians could find a greater level of freedom than they found elsewhere in the city.

- THE CROWD
Times Square blossomed in the first third of the twentieth century, only to slide into notorious decay in the face of the post1945 world of television, suburbs, and racial strife. As Times Square has returned in the past two decades, the crowds that first made the place have also returned, quickly displacing

the memories of the down years. Today, Times Square remains the place where New 'Yorkers celebrate, not just on New Year's Eve and not just at moments of great national achievement, but every day when the lights go down.

SIGHTS TO SEE

- DUFFY SQUARE
46th Street (between Broadway & 7th Avenue)
The newly redesigned and revitalized Duffy Square is a new icon at the Crossroads of the World. Perkins Eastman has transformed Choi Ropiha's competition-winning concept into the most sophisticated all-glass structure in the world, which shines atop a Duffy Square plaza redesigned by William Fellows. Duffy Square hosts the world-famous     TKTS booth, where reduced-price tickets to Broadway's best are sold. The plaza also features two statues - the first is a tribute to World War I hero and pastor of the nearby Holy Cross Church, Father Patrick Duffy, and a second honors Broadway legend George M. Cohan.

- ONE TIMES SQUARE
42nd Street (at Broadway & 7th Avenue)
Every December 31st, an estimated audience of over one billion worldwide watch as the famous New Year's Ball is lowered from the flagpole atop One Times Square (the original headquarters of The New York Times, for which Times Square is named).

- MUSIC AND LAUGHTER
The Brill Building at 1619 Broadway changed the course of music history. Some refer to the building and its environs as "Tin Pan Alley," home to the likes of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. On nearby Music Row (48th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues), you can still see one of the world's greatest concentrations of stores and shops serving musicians and composers. Meanwhile, comedy's biggest superstars can be found onstage at local stand-Up hotspots like Carolines on Broadway.

- ATTRACTIONS & STORES
Be sure to visit neighborhood attractions such as Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium, ESPN Zone, the Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, Mars 2112 and two 0 NYC's most impressive movie houses. Times Square’s flagship store include Hershey’s, M&M’s, Toys “R”

Us, American Eagle, Sephora and Walgreens. Form a galaxy of chocolate to an indoor carousel and animatronics dinosaur, Times Square is the place to truly experience "retailtainment"!

- SIGNS, SIGNS, SIGNS
The Hershey's sign is the tallest. Walgreens' is the largest. Coca-Cola's is an electronic marvel, M&M's is among the most fun and MTV's features some of the most creative content. And they're all changing all the time! But which Times Square "spectacular" captures your attention?

- THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT
As the entertainment capital of the world, it's no surprise that Times Square is host to some of today’s hottest TV shows. Every morning, spectators gather outside Times Square Studios to watch the live broadcast of Good Morning America.

- RESTAURANT ROW
46th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues)
Times Square's own foodie mecca is the quintessential example of everything that makes the Crossroads of the World unique. On this tree-lined strip of brownstones, you can enjoy cuisine from allover the world, sample the styles of celebrity chefs like B. Smith and Lidia Bastianich, and stargaze at Broadway headliners in some of their favorite haunts.

- HISTORIC THEATERS
Times Square hosts more historic theaters than almost any place on earth, and some of the neighborhood's best known playhouses have been lovingly restored by the Jujamcyn Organization, Disney and the New 42nd Street, Inc. Highlights include Shubert Alley, home to the gorgeous facades of some of the grandest Broadway theatres and host of famous productions for over a century, as well as the gloriously restored New Amsterdam and New Victory Theaters on 42nd Street.
